Mexican Sardine Run – The Adventure of a Lifetime
Some wildlife experiences stay with you for a lifetime. This is one of them.
I invite you to join us in Baja California Sur, Mexico, for an adventure at Magdalena Bay, where autumn brings an extraordinary gathering of marine life just offshore. For a short seasonal window, countless small fish gather in the Pacific, and the ocean’s predators arrive in force.

Nature operating at full speed: unpredictable, raw, and deeply humbling!
Imagine floating at the surface as a living silver cloud of sardines turns and reshapes itself beneath you. Suddenly, striped marlin appear—sleek, fast, and brilliantly colored—moving through the school with breathtaking agility. California sea lions, dolphins and dorado may rush into the action, whales may gather nearby, and seabirds can plunge from above as the entire food web comes alive around us.
What we may encounter
Our focus will be the famous striped-marlin and sardine encounters, but Magdalena Bay can offer far more. Depending on the day, weather, and conditions, we may see:
• Vast schools of sardines and mackerel
• Striped marlin hunting around bait balls
• California sea lions
• Common and bottlenose dolphins
• Bryde’s whales, gray whales and, at times, humpback whales
• Mobula rays, particularly later in the season
• Mahi-mahi, tuna, and other pelagic fish
• Silky sharks and other occasional shark species
• Sea turtles and an impressive variety of seabirds, including frigate-birds and pelicans.
Every day on the water is different, and no particular species can be promised. That uncertainty is part of the privilege of experiencing a truly wild, healthy and thriving ecosystem.

The experience
This trip is designed for people who want to be close to the action—not simply watch it from a boat. We will spend our days searching offshore for signs of life, including diving birds, feeding activity, dolphins, and shifting patches of baitfish. When conditions are right, we will enter the water respectfully to observe the action from a safe, responsible distance.
The encounter is primarily a snorkeling and freediving-style ocean safari, rather than traditional scuba diving on a reef. Guests should be comfortable in open water, capable of getting in and out of a boat efficiently, and prepared for a real offshore adventure.
